Modern rock bolts have high post-yield extension capability - up to 15% - 20% strain. This extension can form an important component of overall bolt performance. Measurement of bolt load and extension up to the point of bolt failure provides a factual basis of the need for support rehabilitation and remaining energy absorption capacity of the support elements in areas prone to seismicity.
TRT's new bolt extension monitor (BEM) accurately measures bolt strain, or extension, over the full operational range of a bolt, i.e. the elastic, pre-yield and post yield behaviour, up to bolt failure. Measurements from a cluster of installed bolts are transmitted wirelessly to an iPad Mini for storage and display for immediate assessment by operational personnel.
